Mission Statement
The purpose of the Helena West Helena Street Department is to provide the best maintained infrastructure and to deliver quality service to the residents, businesses, and our visitors so their demands and expectations for essential services can be met, thereby increasing the quality of life in our community.
Responsibilities
The Helena West Helena Street department is charged with a variety of jobs and tasks and includes employees of a wide range of experience and knowledge. One of our primary responsibilities is the collection of Hard Trash items – classified as Class 4 waste by the Regional Landfill. These items include but are not limited to stoves, refrigerators, furniture, etc…. The Department also collects limited amounts of shrubbery, tree limbs, leaf bags / boxes (in accordance to the Proper Containment Ordinance), grass clippings, and other yard waste. These items are generally transported to the local landfill by one of our Loader Trucks. This curbside service is provided to citizens on a routine schedule that coincides with the Sanitation trash routes. Excessive amounts of debris are evaluated and billed accordingly to residents on a case by case basis.
Collaboration
The City of Helena West Helena Street Department has no collaborations with tree cutters, construction crews, demolition crews, or yard service technicians. These are commonly known as Contractors. It is the responsibility of all contractors to remove and dispose of all debris accumulated on any given worksite and not to place these items curbside. Violators will be reported to the City Code Enforcement office.
Billed Service
A mutual agreement / contract between the City of Helena West Helena Street Department and a contractor or homeowner can be arranged to remove excessive amounts of curbside debris for a nominal fee. This fee shall be determined according to the amount of debris removed and the cost of landfill tipping fees in conjunction with an hourly rate for removal of debris. Contact the office for details.
Other Responsibilities
Other responsibilities that are within the scope of the City of Helena West Helena Street Department include but are not limited to maintenance of storm drainages, street sign replacement/ repair, traffic signal maintenance and also, roadway maintenance which includes the areas of pothole repair and removing obstructions such as mudslides, fallen trees, and debris from disasters or wrecks.
Partnerships
The City of Helena West Helena Street Department often partne
rs with other departments within the city to accomplish a common goal. We partner with the Sanitation Department to assist with debris removal from condemned structures being razed. We partner with East and West Water Departments with various construction and drainage projects. We partner with the Parks and Recreation Departments by assisting with grass cutting assignments like the River Park.
Fleet Maintenance
All city vehicles are maintained by the City of Helena West Helena mechanics. These employees also fall under the umbrella of the Street Department. Our fleet includes vehicles from every department in city government including Police, Fire, Administration, Water, Parks and Recreation, Sanitation and the Street Department.
